Back in April of 2014 I found this Eddie Bauer sweater at the thrift store. The yarn was a mixture of Linen, cotton and polyester, which gives it a nice drape and sheen.
I unraveled it in to many little balls of yarn after which I moved back to the east coast.

I found a cute little sweater pattern that I thought would look good knit with this yarn. It is the Summer waves pattern. So I cast on in May... knit at the park, at work .. everywhere you can knit and finished it in July.. I added a few rows of the lace pattern on the sleeves and omitted the garter stitch edging on the neck edge and replace it with one row of single crochet.
The fit is perfect and I plan to wear this to work once the weather gets a little bit cooler. A success story!
My car was totaled,, then new cars.. knittng at the park.. more knitting at the park..(still working on some of the same sweaters :( ... So...I finally finished and mailed out all the Christmas knitting. I know, that's pretty sad. Lately I just don't have the time for knitting as I did in Washington. The good thing is everything fit and they liked the sweaters and matching hats. I always enjoy seeing people wear my hand knits ( especially with smiling faces).
I made this cute little kitty style hat for my daughter. Years ago I made a bunch of kitty hats and she needed an new one. This pattern is the adult version of a kitty hat..
Spending most of my days taking care of my grand kids and working. Add to that painting and cleaning out the house which doesn't leave much time for knitting. But I do. Just not as much as I used to..
So this is what I have been knitting since the day I left Washington. Because of the move and other issues I really have not knitted for a month. Just a few rows here and there. This sweater was supposed to be a Christmas present for my 6 yr. old grandson but now that it is almost finished it fits the 4yr. old perfect. So I have to think of something different last minute. Toys are always a good substitute.
Christmas is here already. No knitting was done this year. This is a first in many that I have not had a pile of knitted gifts for family. This year there were more pressing matters to take care of which left no time for knitting.
A vision from the past. I knit this sweater for one of my sons and it is in such good condition and has almost come back in style hahah. It fits Jayden perfectly!

I wish you all a wonderful New Year. I hope to post a little more this year.
Love this local little coffee stop. There are a lot of these independent coffee shops locally. This one is on the way to the thrift store where I found a bag full of granny squares just ready to put be put together. I think I am just going to make a blanket with them for the grand-kids.

My progress on my scarf. I purchased this yarn at a local yarn shop. I'm actually farther along than this picture and only have two more center lace squares to go before I have to sew the ends together and it will be finished!

The first cool misting morning on my way to work. Lots of anti hair frizzing gel in my future.
Up with the birds and saw this pretty sunrise from my window. Soon it will be really dark in the mornings again. I am still working on my crochet sweater except I had to rip it out twice so it is smaller than it was in the picture in my last post... sigh..
I know I haven't posted for awhile. One of the reasons was that I was working on the sweater above and progress was going pretty slow even though it was my only project. After working on the sweater for a month, I'm not all that happy with how it is turning out so I put it down for a week to decide if I want to put more time into something I'm not 100% happy with. In the mean time... my son came home after three months of working back east and took me to two local yarn shops. I haven't been to a yarn shop in over a year so this was like a little bit of heaven. The first stop was Pacific fabrics and crafts. It is a fabric and yarn shop, a little bit of everything. I didn't purchase anything there but there was definitely some beautiful yarns that I have in mind for the future.

The second stop was Great Yarns and yes I did purchase yarn there and plan to make this my regular place to pick up yarns. They had almost every type of yarn that I love. Both yarn shops are on the same road a few miles from each other and I found out very easy to get to!

It is by Universal Yarn and it is the Classic Shades Sequins Lite. I love the rich colors. They remind me of fall. I'm knitting the Lacy Entrelac Infinity scarf and I have actually knitted this before a few years ago. I loved how it turned out. This version will have sparkles!
I also started on my Christmas knitting list. This little crochet cardigan will be for my granddaughter. The yarn is recycled from a very large thrift store sweater and is very soft and very pink. I think she will like it.
Washington state has been having a very long and very warm summer . Even today it is in the 80's which is really warm for this time of year. I know it wont last though and soon (like tomorrow) the weather is going to change and get cooler and rainy. Thinking ahead, I found this book at my now favorite place to buy books, Half Price Books. So many hats to choose from. I will be able to knit tons of hats for everyone on my list, including me. Oh and of course more rubber bands. I made the grand kids a bunch of charms and bracelets. They each got one with their name on it.
Until next time. Hopefully now that I have started a few different projects I will post more often.

My weekly walk to Trader Joes and more unusual side of the road flowers. My son said they were Washington wild flowers.. a very vague description haha. I don't think he even notices them unless I'm with him pointing them out.

These flowers below look like Hibiscus flowers of some sort. They have a different look from the Hibiscus flowers that I'm used to seeing in Florida. I'm surprised to see them in this cooler climate.

My knitting progress. I'm starting to get discouraged. This is not the prettiest knit sweater I have made. I think it is the nature of the yarn which has rayon, acrylic, wool, rabbit hair. It has no stretch at all and I get some loose stitches here and there that I'm unhappy with. For now I will keep working on it. If it gets any worse I will probably put it aside. I did try it on and it is a perfect fit and very light weight. Just not sure about it at this point.

More rubber band loomy stuff. At least these are practical haha.
As you can see, not much knitting has been going on. I mostly work on this on the bus to work and on my break. I just finished separating the sleeves and putting them on holders and have started on the body. I think it will go a little fast now. Note to self... don't knit when your tired.. I had to rip out one days work that took me one day. I missed one whole row of lace... bah.

I have discovered a new toy. I was in Joanns fabric for some buttons and thread and walked past the rubber band looms and they were 50% off so I said what the heck, it looks like fun. Well one thing led to another and I just couldn't get enough.. I had to make it all.. I ended up ordering the monster tail loom and running to Michael's craft store to purchase the original Rainbow loom and so you can see what happened.

I then had to run out and buy some containers so there wasn't rubber bands all over the place. I don't know why.. but I find this fun and challenging. I really don't know how kids can make some of the charms and bracelets. I found them hard to make. I'm so glad I have grand-kids to send all the bracelets to!!
This week I got to go to the Japanese garden in Seattle. It was really pretty and tranquil. We want to go again in the fall and spring. Every season it looks different when the flowers bloom and the leaves change color. It must be really beautiful and can't wait to go again.
A quick peek at
Something Silver
by Veera Välimäki. This is my new travel project until it gets too big. I would like to start a pretty lacy scarf for another take along project and I have one in mind. Just have to decide on the yarn. Happy knitting.
This project started as a very large thrift store find. It is a Mossimo supply co. sweater, 70% acrylic and 30% wool. The yarn is also think and thin. I really like the tones of grey. It took quite a bit to unravel. A few sweaters I have unraveled use two different balls of yarn switching them every other row which takes longer to unravel.
One sleeve almost complete. Hopefully I will finish this sleeve tonight and pick up the second one. I'm cleaning up the apartment today. We are going to have an inspection.. what ever that is. This place is small and clean. I just need to organize some stuff to look pretty ..
nylon, rayon blend, also very soft and was a vintage Old Navy sweater once upon a time. I love the sweat yarn combo and my fingers are itching to work on it. As always I will concentrate on finishing Leksak Lady first.

I haven't blogged in so long.. Family issues and other stresses made me require a little quiet time to think things out. In the mean time I went on a few day trips on my days off. The beach is really close to where I live, only a 10 minute drive. The little city of Edmonds is very pretty and sits right on the coast overlooking the ferry and ocean. The above picture is a pretty little shop in the city. Below is a field of flowers that I walk past on my way to work. Believe it or not we have had no rain in over three weeks. There was a little drizzle last night so all the grass and flowers are starting to dry up.

These flowers are so unusual looking. I have no idea what they are and this is the first time I have seen them. Not quite a succulent even thought it looks like one.
Another bus ride... where I get a lot of my knitting done these days.. Almost finished.

My Saturday morning walk past the baseball field and this pretty field of flowers.

Yes!! Finished! I still have to wash it and block it. It turned out just a little bit big for me even though it is the size small. I love it all the same. It's so soft and cozy. This was knit with recycled yarn from a Ralph Lauren size large sweater. There is enough yarn left over for a nice big scarf or another more fitted sweater. Wool, acrylic, rabbit hair.. omy!

And another finished project. I LOVE Noro yarn. If I had my way I would have a room full of it and would knit all my projects with it.... This chevron cowl was featured on the cover of the Noro Knitting Magazine issue 4. It only requires one skein of Noro Taiyo that I was able to find on sale.
Walking to Trader Joe's today we passed by these really pretty bell like flowers. The very pretty white tree from my last post has started to turn pink. I was a beautiful day out... on the cool side and nice and sunny.

I decided to make a little log of all the sweaters I have recycled for yarn. This is temporary until I get a nice book or folder. So as of now I have recycled 12 1/2 sweaters. I still have one sitting on the couch in the works. I have been really surprised at how nice the yarn is from these sweaters. I even seemed to find the colors I that I was looking for.

Another recycled sweater finished. This is a linen/cotton blend.

This sweater I actually finished last year and every time I try it on.. I take it off because it just doesn't look right. So I made a decision to rip the front sections back to look more like a cardi instead of a wrap sweater. It looks a lot better and I think I will actually wear it now. The front just didn't fall right and after trying many different ways to wear it, I think I found the answer.

I cast on this little Noro cowl with my Taiyo yarn. It is so soft and colorful. Just a pleasure to knit and so much fun to watch the colors form the pattern.
Beautiful Washington state. Every time I go walking I see such pretty trees and flowers. Sometimes I feel like I'm in a beautiful garden. Such a pretty tree should be in a fairie's garden. Below are flowers I see every day on the side of the road as I walk to work. Just to think some day in the future these flowers will be some kind of wild berries! I could get a snack on the way to work.

Another sweater story... This sweater started out as a thrift store find. The brand was Woodstock international by Bernard. This sweater yielded over a 1000 yards of yarn. Price was $4.99 and fiber content is 55% linen and 45% cotton. You can really feel the linen and see the sheen on this yarn. All the sweaters I recycle have just a tiny bit of damage. Either a little hole or a stain somewhere. This had a tiny hole and a few stains.

The beginning of the knitting, knitting on the bus and almost a month later... finished. I still have to go to buy some buttons and give it a good wash and light blocking. The style of this sweater is a little boxy and I'm hoping after a little blocking I can reshape it a little. It has nice drape due to the linen.

I can't seem to stay away from the thrift store. Another good find. I love the color of this sweater and the yarn is slightly thick and thin. This sweater is by Mossimo Supply Co. 70% acrylic and 30% wool, XXL and only $6.99. I think there will be lots of yarn from this sweater to make something wonderful for winter. (^_^)
I splurged this week and purchased a Noro magazine and one ball of yarn ( the cost of one ball equals the price of four thrift store sweaters). I just wanted to make a small project because I love Noro colors so much. This little cowl is going to be so pretty and colorful. Perfect for the cooler weather in the fall. This is going to be my new travel project.
A happy little girl with her new sweater. I think it just fits.. so I'll have to make the next size bigger for her next time.
Thrift store finds. I found these beauties on my last trip there. The two aqua sweaters are vintage old navy with the old labels they don't use anymore. The middle sweater is so nice I may not unravel it. It is size small and fits.
I cast on this sweater right after I finished the little blue sweater and it hasn't gotten very far. Every few rows I make a mistake and have to rip it back. The yarn is recycled cotton/linen blend and feels really nice with nice drape, so I rip and knit on. Some day it will be the oriel lace cardigan. I had high hopes of finishing this fast, but I now see this isn't going to happen.
I'm finding that unraveling sweaters is a good stress relief. It had kind of gotten addicting. Both of these yarns are cotton acrylic blends with a little rabbit hair. So soft.
A picture of my beautiful daughter who had grow into a beautiful women. She is going through some hard times right now. I will be returning to Florida for the summer to help out and will hopefully be able to make it back to Washington before fall to start school and continue to make a better life for myself. Back to the heat.. sigh.
Yay.. Finished in just about two weeks. This pattern is called Leksak. The ravelry link is here.

As I stated the last time, this is my favorite type of sweater construction. Top down, seamless, one piece. The yarn I used was a light cotton/acrylic blend recycled from a large thrift store sweater. I actually used less than half of the yarn, so there is enough for another small sweater or shrug. I think is a perfect summer sweater for a pretty young lady.

Next... a new thrift store sweater to take apart. This sweater is actually in really good condition and pretty. I loved the black and white tweed yarn. This sweater is also a cotton, acrylic, poly blend. Very soft and light. I will probably use this yarn for a fall sweater. I'm hoping to be able to use the sequins too! For today I will be casting on another summer cotton sweater I can't wait. The little navy blue cardi is getting a bath and will get a light blocking. That will dry over night and I'll mail that out on Thursday. I'm hoping it will fit.

After unraveling the sweater I found at the thrift store I started this little sweater for my grand daughter. She wanted a navy sweater for summer. The yarn is a very light cotton acrylic blend. I have basically stopped all other knitting and have been solely working on this little sweater. The pattern name is Leksak and I'm making a longer cardigan. I started the project on April 29th.

My favorite type of sweater to knit is exactly this.. a top down one piece raglan.

As you can see it is progressing pretty quickly. I'm worried about the size. The gauge is right on.. I'm just wondering if the chest sizing is a little small. I'm knitting size 8. I always find it hard to knit for someone when they are now able to try it on at different stages for sizing. I love the way the sweater is connected at the neck.

Knitting on the way to work and at work and on the way home from work.

This is where I am at today. After doing the usual laundry and day off stuff I plan on watching "The Paradise" and spending the evening knitting away.

A beautiful walk to work. The trees at filling out and flowers are blooming. (^_^)
Here is a picture of all my recycled yarn projects to date. The finished cotton lace sweater from 100% cotton gap sweater yarn. The aqua lace shrug that is still on the needles being knit with wool, acrylic angora blend yarn from a Ralph Lauren sweater and a summer tunic for my grand daughter knit with a cotton acrylic blend from a Sonoma sweater. I love the feel and texture of all the recycled yarns. The navy cotton is soft and light and will make a perfect summer tunic. This sweater has an unusual design that I'll tell you more about next time. I have a day off today and we are having wonderfully warm weather.

Progress this morning of both projects. The color of the lace shrug in this picture is almost perfect.
Progress this afternoon on the little cotton tunic. Finished the raglan increases and put the sleeves on hold and now working on the body. That is all for now. So back to knitting and enjoying this beautiful warm sunny day!
Bye Bye American Eagle outfitters sweater.. hello acrylic, wool. nylon, alpaca yarn. Again there is a good amount of soft yarn from this sweater. I'm getting good at unraveling sweaters now. I also know what to look for. If you want to do this yourself the sweaters you want to stay away from are the ones that are cut and sewn by machine. That means that you will only get a lot of ends and nothing that you can use for knitting. I look for better fibers like linen, wool, cotton, alpaca, angora and cashmere. Also a lot of the commercial yarn is made up of lots of thinner threads that are not spun together. It is usable but you have to be careful when knitting. Check the seams to see if they are put together with the same yarn using a chain stitch. That usually means that the sweaters pieces will unravel and there will be very little wasted yarn. This sweater yielded lots of beautiful yarn.

Another trip to the thrift store and two more sweaters half price. The first one is a Gap sweater, viscose, lambs' wool, nylon, angora and cashmere. The navy sweater a sonoma sweater 56% cotton 44% acrylic. It has a really nice feel and a nice sheen. I already have a project for this and you will see this soon. My son was admiring this yarn. hehe
Progress on my shrug. This yarn looks more blue in person and I love knitting with it. So far I have only been working on this going to work on the bus. The yarn is light and soft and cozy. I better get knitting so I can enjoy waring this soon.
Knitting on the bus on the way home. I actually get quite a bit of knitting done on my trip to and from work. This is a large lace shrug that I'm knitting with yarn I recycled from a Ralph Lauren sweater. I love the yarn. It's really soft and light due to the little bit of angora in it.

Spent time today unraveling more sweaters. This sweater had a Cherokee label inside. It's the first acrylic sweater I decided to recycle only because of the color and the condition of it. I'm glad I decided to buy it. I was able to unravel every bit of yarn from this sweater with the only wasted yarn being the yarn and tread that was used to sew it together. I think I can make one giant wrap sweater with this or two smaller sweaters. Great find at the thrift store.

Up to date... all the yarn from the sweaters I have been unraveling. Yarn from one sweater is missing. Right now I have enough yarn to make 7 nice size sweaters. woo hoo!!

My first finished recycled sweater. Finished this today. Has lovely drape and will be perfect in the summer here over a tee-shirt. Yay!!

Here is the yarn that was missing from the pile of yarn in the previous picture. This is a Bass sweater 55% Ramie and 45% cotton. I love the color of this one and I think I will make a short sleeve cardigan with this. The pattern is already on my ravelry queue. (^_^)
Once again I found some goodies at the thrift store. First was this lovely wooden leaf bowl for $4.99. I recently saw one very similar to this in a store for a lot more money. Below is a picture of three sweaters that will soon be unraveled for yarn. The first one is actually acrylic but it was in excellent condition and only $4.99 in the perfect color. The second sweater is a ramie and cotton blend, again in a beautiful color and the third sweater is a wool, acrylic and alpaca.. very soft and a very neutral color. I think I will have enough yarn from these three sweaters to keep me knitting all summer.

What's in my knitting basket now? The cream lace sweater is almost finished with about one inch left to knit on the ribbing and then I just have to bind it off and sew up the back seam. The other project I just started on the bus the other day. This is recycled yarn and I couldn't wait to knit with this. First I love the color and second its so soft and is knitting up like butter... hehe. It took me awhile to decide which pattern I wanted to make. I finally decide on another lace shrug, the HiyaHiya Tulip shrug. (ravelry link).
So lately I have been thrift store shopping and looking for large sweaters made with good fibers to unravel and then recycle the yarn for a new sweater. This Eddie Bauer sweater is linen, cotton and polyester. It has a nice sheen and I love the feel of the linen. It was really well made.

As you can see, this purple sweater was unraveled. This is also a linen cotton blend and yielded a lot of yarn.

There was an added bonus from the Eddie Bauer sweater... nice wooden buttons. The process of unraveling a sweater is a little tedious. So it is important to check fiber content and look at the way the sweater was made. I was unable to use the button bands because of the sewn button holes.

This is the yarn from 3 sweaters. It doesn't look like much in the picture but there is a lot of yarn. The blue and the purple sweaters had over 1000 + yards each and the linen sweater if I guesstimate is somewhere between 800 - 900 yards. The sweaters with cables have lots of yardage.

A quick look at the process... remove the neck, then pick out all the seams and then find where the end is and start pulling. If you are lucky the seams are chain stitched together and if you find the end, one tug will let you just pull the yarn and the seam will unravel.

Unfortunately this beautiful Irish knit was cut and sewn together. Not much of the yarn is usable. There is still enough for a small sweater , shrug or accessories. The yarn is beautiful wool tweed.

And... my progress on my first sweater knit with recycled yarn. It's coming along and I should have it finished this week. This is 100% cotton probably Aran weight with lots of drape. It is also very soft. Just to let you know.. this is really fun to do. Hunting down sweaters and then making them into something new. I need to decide on sweater patterns for the light blue and purple yarn now.. I can't wait to knit with the yarn!
Spring has arrived in Washington state. This is a view of the street I live on. I woke up the other day and all the trees bloomed. The weather has warmed up a little and sometimes the sun peeks out hehe.
I have been thrift store shopping for large sweaters that I want to take apart for the yarn. I found these three the other day. The first was made in Ireland and is beautiful tweed wool. The pretty blue sweater is a Polo by Ralph Lauren sweater. I'm finding that Ralph Lauren makes very nice quality sweaters. (they are put together really well!) This sweater is wool, acrylic and rabbit hair, also a nice find. I love the color and was actually looking for this color yarn. The third sweater is 85% linen and 40% cotton. I love the color and it was only $4.99 for all that yarn! It will take me about two evenings to take it apart. I can't wait to knit something up with all the yarn. I have already taken apart the light blue sweater and wound it into skeins and washed it today. The yarn is very light and soft about a worsted weight. I have a few projects in mind for this yarn.

More thrift store finds. Five balls of 100% cotton dk yarn. There is about 700 yards of this. I'm looking at some shrug patterns for this. It will make a nice light cover up for work that I can use this summer. I also found 4 tiny beer glasses perfect for when we do our little beer tastings. The glasses were .69 cents each and the yarn was a total of $6. It was probably left overs from someones project.

If you remember my last post, I took apart a large cotton Gap sweater. I'm in the process of knitting a cotton lace shrug with that yarn. I finished one side and now I have to knit another identical to that one. I memorized the pattern so this is my bus and work knitting project. This yarn has great drape and feels comfy.

The undoing of a sweater.
I picked it all apart, wound it into balls, then wound the balls into skeins and gave it all a bath. As this all dries I will be looking at pretty sweater patterns. I'm not sure of the yardage but there is a lot. I would guess at about 1000 yards. I guess this is my project this year... recycling thrift store sweaters that people no longer want and making them into something new and pretty!
I know it has been a while.. I basically have been working on one project the last few weeks. I thought I was knitting faster than I really was... so much time has gone by since my last post. We are experiencing some spring like weather here in Washington state. I say spring LIKE.. hehe.
So I decided to try something that I have been wanting to do for a while and that is buy a very large mans sweater from the thrift store, take it apart and then knit something wonderful out of the yarn. This is what I found after a hunt and search with my son. The price was good , 100% cotton. Let me tell you, that sweater was made very well. I was able to get almost all of the yarn with very little waste. I now have enough beautiful cotton aran weight yarn to make a good size sweater. More on this project in the future.

Here is a picture of my Halo cowl. All the knitting is finished and I just have to join the ends and wash it. I really like how this turned out. It is very light and airy with a little glitter. Perfect for spring.

I had to throw in this picture of the comfy seats I sit in on the bus on the way home from work. They are so comfy that sometimes I fall asleep!
A recap of the last few weeks.
We got snow...again.. but then it melted the next day and rained.
A tragic event.. my needle broke. I was knitting next to my son and got up for a second and my needle fell on the floor.. he moved his chair unfortunately right on my needle and it broke. I ran out to Joann's fabrics to see if the interchangeable needles they sell there would work on my cables and they do! I was so happy because this all happened on my day off.. the day I had planned to finish my sweater. I ran back home and was still able to get some knitting done. Eventually I will replace the broken harmony needle so that I have a complete set.

On the way home from work I lost my hat in the mall some where. I went back to trace my steps and asked in the two stores I walked in but no one had found it.. so the next day I whipped up this hat.

Poor little snow man melted by the afternoon after the snow..
Another Sunday walk to Trader Joes. I love trees and greenery here. It smells so fresh.

Finally I finished my Miette sweater! It fits perfect, I just haven't been able to get a good picture of it.
Another walk to the bus on a beautiful Washington day. Cool, crisp and sunny.
Yay... a new project. This is the Halo cowl by Grace Mcewen. This pattern can be found on ravelry. The yarn I'm using is Patons Lace with sequins. It is so pretty.

The Sister hat.. My sister saw my hat and wants one just like it! Well she is lucky because I just lost my hat yesterday somewhere at work. I has to be in the building somewhere. No one could find it. I really do not feel like making the same hat again. I'm thinking I may just purchase a hat on sale. I saw some at JC Penny's. This way if I loose that one I wont mind as much.
For some reason I am working on one project right now... the Miette sweater. I love the simple design of this sweater. It reminds me of sweaters back in the 60's. I did a gauge swatch and for some reason I think I'm knitting a little tighter than I did for my swatch. The size small is 34" and I measure 32" in the bust. So hopefully all will be ok. I should be starting on the sleeves some time today or tomorrow.
I have started and early morning shift one day a week to work on shipping shoes from the store. I have to be at the bus stop at 7am. Here is a picture of the dark early morning.. hopefullly spring will bring some early morning sunshine. adrienne *+*(^_^) +*+http://www.blogger.com/profile/04164811683876016684noreply@blogger.com4
